As reported in the Washington Post, a new coalition named the Specialty Access Alliance (SAA) launched this week with a focus on patients with rare, chronic, and complex conditions who rely on specialty pharmacy care. The launch comes as specialty medicines play a growing role in treating complex conditions and attract greater attention in Washington and across the country.

The SAA brings together the National Health Council, Immune Deficiency Foundation, sickle cell patient group Sick Cells, and Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy to inform policymakers about patients’ experiences accessing and managing specialty treatments.‌ In tandem with its launch, the coalition released a report, The People of Specialty Pharmacy, to share information about the patients who use specialty medications and the services that support their care.

The report examines how specialty pharmacies help address clinical, financial, and logistical challenges, including treatment management, care coordination, and complex medication administration and delivery. The Cigna Group is a supporter of the SAA and broader efforts to increase policymakers’ understanding of specialty pharmacy and the patients it serves.
