On July 23, AHIP President and CEO Mike Tuffin wrote an opinion piece in The New York Times saying, “common-sense bipartisan reforms are needed to promote competition in care delivery and prescription drugs, protect consumers from providers and drugmakers’ anticompetitive practices and transition away from the perverse incentives of fee-for-service medicine.” Tuffin notes that health plans operate in highly competitive markets and negotiate substantial savings for clients and patients.
On the other hand, drug manufacturers continue to abuse patent loopholes and hospital systems and provider groups “have consolidated steadily over the past two decades to gain market power, thwart competition and raise prices.” The opinion piece, written in response to an article about recently proposed legislation to break up large insurers, concludes by arguing that “There is no evidence that arbitrarily disrupting efforts to better integrate coverage and care would make health care more affordable.”
