Mississippi Considers Alternative Association Health Plan Regulation

Mississippi legislators introduced a bill that would allow professional or trade associations in the state to offer their members health benefit coverage through self-funded plans regulated by another state’s insurance department or the federal government, rather than solely Mississippi’s insurance regulations.

To qualify for this exemption, plans would be required to demonstrate to the Mississippi Commissioner of Insurance that they meet specific criteria, such as being established for at least three years for purposes other than just obtaining or providing insurance, operating under sound actuarial principles, and that the plan is not offered to the general public.
